Stay on our llama farm

Why not volunteer to look after our llamas, whilst staying on our farm?

Our volunteer program is what keeps the sanctuary alive - it would be impossible to do what we do without our volunteer fees. Volunteering at The Llama Sanctuary is like having the most amazing idylic holiday - but also simultaneously contributing to a great cause!

Stay for a weekend, a week, a month, or several months! Help us and learn about day to day llama farm management - feeding the llamas, cleaning the stables, grooming, training - basically everything llama. In addition, help feed the pigs, look after the chickens, turkeys, geese, and peacock! We also have a large colony of rescued feral cats living on the farm.

The sanctuary only operates the volunteer programme in the warmer months of the year, which means we have to ‘make hay whilst the sun shines’ and effectively secure our annual running costs in just six months.

The Llama Sanctuary is nestled on the side of a wooded valley. Red kites and buzzards soar above the valley floor in Summer, and in the night when the wild birds have gone to bed, the mighty river can be heard roaring down below whilst the owls merrily hoot and the bats come out to play from the roof of our house. We are surrounded by beautiful beaches and coastline on three sides, roughly about 35-40 mins drive in each direction.

Testimonials

“Every single day on the farm was filled with joie de vivre and interminable fun, which to me is not surprising when you are surrounded by 100+ animals of all kinds and people whose taste and way of looking at things is identical to yours. Sometimes I would wonder how it was feasible to meet your настоящих друзей when you were not even looking for any. But somehow it was meant to be, and now I think of it as my true home, and everyone and everything (I am talking to you, Old Tree on the Hill) that inhabits it or is related to it - my family. Reminiscing about this adventure that I'll never be able to forget while sitting in my room, thousands of miles away from that place is heart-rending, that is for sure, but it makes me look forward to return as soon as possible.” - Sasha, Ukraine

“Matt and Alex are the kindest and most accommodating hosts you could ever have and the menagerie of animals never leaves a dull moment! I throughly enjoyed the different personalities of the Llamas as well as helping with the feeding, training and grooming. I also learned a lot from Matt about general animal management, and now consider myself a bit of a pig whisperer / chicken hotel manager / llama lady extraordinaire. The balance between work and leisure was ideal, and I was trusted to manage my own time. They are also happy for you to pursue your own interests so I also made blackberry jam, apple pies and balsam flower gin during my stay. We also went on several adventures including a very memorable and epic long walk across the beautiful Preseli Hills, as well as several swims & BBQ's at the beach. My accommodation was private, peaceful and warm, and I was always made to feel a part of the family. The Llama Sanctuary will always be my 'happy place' and I highly recommend!'“ - Brigida, Tasmania

“Being there was like being part of a family. There are so many animals and everyone had their own personality be it the llamas or the chickens or the pigs or Fintan the dog. The owners are both patient, loving, super fun, and joke around a lot. Especially with Matt, the banter is everflowing. They also realize and respect that everyone has different strengths and weaknesses, and put a lot of effort into ensuring that work is assigned accordingly. Matt is very chilled, pragmatic, and easygoing. Alex is one of the kindest people that I have ever come across. I had dozens of amazing experiences on the farm but it was the people that made it possible. I am very grateful to both of them for having me over.” - Sahil, India

“It was an amazing and unforgettable month with Alex, Matt, the llamas, chickens, cats, pigs..! I get a big smile on my face when I think of you some moment, see pictures or tell somebody about this positive crazy time with you! All the llamas were a funny experience just like all the other farm jobs. I have learned so much important stuff in this time! I felt myself welcome from the first day, you have always something to laugh about. We had many nights with funny games or interesting conversation or with a big bonfire or watching the beautiful star sky or watching a film! Same like the days off with nice trips to little towns or beaches or walking in the wood and discovering old ruins. It was really hard to leave this lovely place and family. I’m not good to write down my thoughts in words. Thank you for all!! Especialy for the vegan cooking.” - Teresa, Germany

“I had a wonderful experience at The Llama Sanctuary, staying at this beautiful farm with such a lovely family! I couldn't have expected better! The tents in which we were sleeping were so comfy! A lovely bed, cozy lights and decorations, a magnificent view over the nearby hills; all the ingredients for a magic stay! There is a lot of work to do at the farm, but I found the balance between work and leisure ideal. Time was flying while we were making satisfying and fun work! The whole family was adorable! They made me discover the local food and culture with such generosity and enthusiasm that I didn't want to leave. I warmly recommend you to apply at this wonderful farm if you want to discover Britain and helping out at the farm in a fun way, while having adorable (human & animal) company! I've had the most amazing experience I could possibly wish for, and I hope you will too!” - Marion, Belgium
